Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.

No US figure is shown. County Business Patterns is coded to the 2017 US edition of NAICS; this code either does not exist there, names a different industry, or is outside the programme's coverage (most of agriculture, rail, postal and public administration are). A figure is attached only where both the code and the title agree.

How businesses here compete

The structural profile of subsector 333, which every industry beneath it inherits. This is analyst judgment from how the subsector is organised — not research into this industry, and not a measurement.

Canada is unusually good at this. Husky, of Bolton, Ontario, builds the injection-moulding systems that turn out food and beverage containers, medical devices and consumer-electronics parts, sells about three-quarters of its output outside North America, and was sold to Platinum Equity for US$3.85B [A]; ATS of Cambridge builds automated production lines and reported C$2,972.9M of revenue in fiscal 2026 [A]; British Columbia's sawmill-equipment makers supply mills worldwide. Small builders exist too — 308 of 660 establishments have fewer than ten people — usually an engineer who left a larger builder with one application he understands. The cut is what must be spent before the first sale, and what the incumbents earn after it. A production machine is bought by a plant manager who will be blamed if the line stops, so the first question is where one is already running. An entrant has to design, build and prove a machine, then place it on favourable terms to obtain that reference, carrying engineering payroll throughout — U.S. payroll in this group averages about US$91,000 per employee [A]. The incumbents' advantage then compounds through the installed base: services and spare parts were C$1,009.3M of ATS's adjusted revenue, about a third [A], and Platinum's announcement stressed Husky's aftermarket sales to "a large and growing installed base". That recurring income funds the next machine's development and lets the incumbent discount new equipment. An entrant has no installed base, so it has neither the reference nor the annuity. A niche builder can be bought, which is a study of one company rather than an industry path. Plant software is screened separately.

Industrial IoT & Predictive Maintenance — Machine-Health Sensors, Condition Monitoring and APM Across Plants, Utilities and MinesStructure decides
binding constraint: capital intensity
Incumbent Split by plant type. In process industries, the automation vendors hold it: AspenTech (Emerson), GE Vernova APM (Meridium, SmartSignal), AVEVA (Schneider Electric), Siemens (Senseye) and Honeywell Forge. In discrete manufacturing there is no single leader, and Augury is the best-funded independent

The process-plant layer is owned by the automation vendors, and the factory-floor layer is a sensor-and-analyst business that venture money is already paying for in nine figures. Emerson paid $265.00 a share in cash for the AspenTech shares it did not already own and completed the merger on 2025-03-12; AspenTech, whose software includes the Aspen Mtell predictive-maintenance product, now reports inside Emerson's Control Systems & Software segment [A, Emerson release]. AspenTech's last 10-K showed $1,127.5M of FY2024 revenue across all its suites, APM among them [A]. That segment grew 7% to $4,205M in FY2025 [A, Emerson 10-K]. GE Vernova sells Meridium and SmartSignal as its APM line [C], Siemens bought Southampton's Senseye in June 2022 [B, Siemens release], AVEVA sits inside Schneider Electric, and Honeywell sells Forge on top of its own control systems [C]. The buyer at a refinery, a utility or a mine buys reliability analytics from whoever installed the control system. Below them, the sensor-plus-AI vendors for discrete plants are already well funded. Augury raised a $75M Series F led by Lightrock at a valuation above $1B in February 2025 [B, company release]. Tractian raised a $120M Series C led by Sapphire Ventures in December 2024 [B, counsel releases]. AssetWatch raised a $75M Series C led by Viking Global in April 2025 [B, company release]. Edmonton's Nanoprecise closed US$36M of equity and debt in March 2025, taking its total to US$53M [B, BetaKit]. KCF Technologies took Graham Partners growth equity in 2022 [B]. Each sells wireless vibration, temperature and ultrasound sensors, plus software, plus certified vibration analysts who check the alerts. That makes it a hardware-and-services business with SaaS margins only at scale. The software-only exits are not encouraging. Senseye had raised about $20M before Siemens bought it for an undisclosed price [B, Verdantix]. IFS announced a deal to buy Falkonry in 2023, and Falkonry's own site now says the merger was never completed [C]. Uptake went to Bosch in March 2026 for undisclosed terms, and by then it was a fleet-maintenance company [A, Bosch release]. How this differs from its neighbours. CMMS (8113) is the work-order system: it records that a bearing was changed. EAM (541514) is the asset register and lifecycle plan. Both already list APM and Augury at the edges. This record is the condition-monitoring layer underneath: the sensors and models that say a bearing will fail, and then raise the work order in the CMMS. MES and plant automation (333) runs production rather than the health of the machines. The 333 anchor is navigation only. The buyers are manufacturers, utilities and power generators, oil and gas, chemicals, mining, metals, pulp and paper, and food and beverage plants. Capital intensity decides it. An entrant needs a sensor fleet, a team of certified analysts and an installed base to train its models on, and four rivals have each already raised $36M to $120M in a single recent round.

Incumbent Siemens Opcenter, Rockwell (Plex), SAP Digital Manufacturing

MES is sold and implemented through system integrators, not directly — the integrator relationship is the distribution channel and it takes years to build. The software also has to speak to whatever PLC and SCADA estate is already installed, which favours the vendors who supplied it. Anchored at the 333 subsector because MES spans all of discrete manufacturing rather than any one industry group. Sourced update: Rockwell's Software & Control segment grew 9% to $2,383M while lifting operating margin from 24.2% to 29.7%. An entrant is attacking a business that is compounding margin, which is the least promising moment to attack one.
