HCM — Human Capital Management suites
Entry signal — what decides who wins here
One thing must be trueEntry turns on a single condition that can be named and tested before much is spent. Clear it and this becomes an execution question; fail it and no amount of operating skill helps.
Displace an incumbent the screen found well defended — payments attached to the workflow, data that does not leave, a contract that renews itself. Share here means giving a buyer a reason to break something that currently works, which is a higher bar than being better.
Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.
This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — incumbent vulnerability
The enterprise HCM suite was assembled by acquisition, and the latest owners are private-equity funds that paid for the switching cost. This record is the suite tier: core HR, payroll, talent and workforce management sold as one system to mid-market and enterprise employers. It sits above the HRM record (541514-hrm-human-resource-management), which tested the SMB all-in-one tier of Rippling, Gusto and OrangeHRM, and alongside the ATS, WFM and EOR records, which cover modules this tier also sells. Oracle got into HCM by buying PeopleSoft, completed January 2005 for about $11.1B [A, Oracle 10-K], and then Canadian-born Taleo at $46 a share, about $1.9B, announced February 2012 [A]. SAP took control of SuccessFactors on 21 February 2012 for about US$3.6B including all components, at $40 a share [A, SAP annual report]. Ultimate Software and Kronos merged into UKG on 1 April 2020 under Hellman & Friedman [C]. Thoma Bravo closed its US$12.3B take-private of Dayforce (formerly Ceridian) on 4 February 2026 [B, Thoma Bravo release]. Paychex bought Paycor on 14 April 2025 at $22.50 a share [A, Paychex 8-K]. Clearlake took Cornerstone OnDemand private in October 2021 at $57.50 a share [A, Cornerstone release]. Payroll lock-in decides it. ADP estimates its Employer Services client retention at about 13 years, and its revenue retention there was 92.1% in fiscal 2026 [A, ADP 10-K]. Paycom reports 91% annual revenue retention [A] and Paylocity more than 92% [A]. A payroll switch is timed to a tax year and carries the risk of paying a workforce wrongly. The money in the challenger tier is going to HiBob (US$166M in September 2026 at a reported ~$3.2B) and Personio (US$8.5B valuation in 2022). A new suite entrant would face incumbents with billion-dollar revenues and buyers who change systems about once a decade.

Market size, derived
Built from the competitor set upward rather than quoted from a forecast. Published TAMs in these categories are frequently reverse-engineered from each other, so any published figure is checked against the vendor arithmetic rather than trusted on its own.
Disclosed revenue from 6 of 15 named vendors. The market is at least this large.
No vendor has both a disclosed revenue and a published share.
Only a revenue floor is known — the true market is larger by whatever the undisclosed vendors earn.

HCM suites are payroll-anchored systems of record: the regulated, tax-filing core makes self-hosting a liability, so open source plays only at the HR-admin edge, as in HRM.
Evidence
Evidence. Market size and market share UNVERIFIED — no audited HCM market figure is used and Oracle, SAP and UKG publish no HCM line. Vendor revenue IS sourced from filings opened on sec.gov on 2026-10-13 [A]: Workday 10-K FY2026 (filed 2026-03-06); ADP 10-K FY2026 (filed 2026-08-05; segment table, Workforce Now 90,000+, 13-year retention, 92.1% ES revenue retention); Paychex 10-K FY2026 and its 8-K of 2025-04-14 (Paycor merger at $22.50); Paycom 10-K 2025 (39,200 clients, 91% retention); Paylocity 10-K FY2026 (>92% retention); Dayforce 10-K 2024 (revenue by geography, 6,876 customers) and Q3 2025 10-Q; Oracle 8-K of 2005-01-03 ($26.50 tender, 75% for ~$7.9B), Oracle FY2005 10-K (PeopleSoft ~$11.1B — so the task's ~$10.3B is the headline equity figure, not Oracle's total) and FY2007 10-K (control on 2004-12-29); Oracle DEFA14A of 2012 (Taleo $46.00/share, ~$1.9B net); SAP 2011 annual report exhibit (SuccessFactors control 2012-02-21, US$40.00/share, ~US$3.6B total). Opened [B]: Thoma Bravo's completion release for Dayforce (2026-02-04, $70.00/share, ~$12.3B, NYSE/TSX delisting); SiliconANGLE on HiBob (2026-09-01); People Matters on Personio (2022-06-22); tech.eu on Factorial (2022-10-11); Employment Hero's own Series F post (2023-10-23) and Humi post (2025-01-22, no price given); Unleash on Humi ($69.5M, currency unstated); RBCx release on Nmbr. Cornerstone's own completion release (2021-10-15) [A]. Opened [C]: Wikipedia on UKG (merger 2020-04-01, ownership), Dayforce (ADIA minority, 2024 rename) and Taleo (Quebec City 1996). Customer counts and HiBob's $400M revenue are company claims [C]. Taleo domains observed 2026-10-13 without following redirects: www.taleo.com and taleo.com 301 to oracle.com/human-capital-management/taleo/; www.taleo.net 301 to oracle.com/us/products/applications/taleo/enterprise/overview/index.html; bare taleo.net gave no HTTPS response and HTTP 502. oracle.com robots.txt returned 403, so no Oracle page was opened. NOT opened: ukg.com (Cloudflare challenge), adp.com and sap.com product pages (403), personio.com (429), globenewswire.com and investors.paylocity.com (403), techcrunch.com (excluded). Market-research CAGR figures were not used. Any revenue floor summed from the competitor rows overstates HCM: Workday's figure includes Financials and ADP's Employer Services includes outsourcing services. Verify before acting.
