ITSM and IT Portfolio Management — Service Desk, ITFM and SPM
Entry signal — what decides who wins here
One thing must be trueEntry turns on a single condition that can be named and tested before much is spent. Clear it and this becomes an execution question; fail it and no amount of operating skill helps.
Displace an incumbent the screen found well defended — payments attached to the workflow, data that does not leave, a contract that renews itself. Share here means giving a buyer a reason to break something that currently works, which is a higher bar than being better.
Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.
This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — incumbent vulnerability
The incumbent is a $13B platform that started as a service desk, and it has just bought the AI wedge. ServiceNow reported full-year 2025 revenue of $13.278B, up 21%, with 603 customers paying more than $5M a year in annual contract value, up from 502 [A, 10-K filed 2026-01-29]. IT Service Management, IT Operations Management, asset management and Strategic Portfolio Management all sit in its Technology product group, so the CIO who buys the service desk is offered the portfolio tool on the same platform and contract. The obvious entry point for a newcomer — an AI agent that answers employee requests before they become tickets — was Moveworks, and ServiceNow acquired it on 15 December 2025 for total consideration of $2.4B [A, 10-K]. It has also agreed to buy Armis, a cyber-exposure and asset-discovery vendor, for about $7.75B [A, 10-K]. The tier below is crowded and already funded. Atlassian sells Jira Service Management to the 350,000-plus customers of a company with $6.572B of fiscal 2026 revenue, up 26% [A, 10-K filed 2026-08-14]. Freshworks says its employee-experience business, led by Freshservice, crossed $500M of ARR in 2025, with its Device42 asset tool and its enterprise service management add-on each above $40M [A, Q4 2025 release]. BMC Helix was separated from KKR-owned BMC, and Montagu agreed in June 2026 to take a majority stake [B, BMC release]. Ivanti, TOPdesk (CVC Growth Funds, about €200M minority stake [B]), SysAid (IGP, $30M [B]), HaloITSM (self-funded), ManageEngine (Zoho), EasyVista (Eurazeo), Matrix42, Xurrent (PSG) and InvGate (Riverwood, $35M [B]) fill the mid-market. Free GLPI and iTop cover the bottom. The 'run IT as a business' side has been consolidated into the same suites. IBM bought Apptio, the IT-cost-transparency (TBM) leader, for $4.6B in 2023 [B]; Planview was sold to TPG and TA Associates for $1.6B in 2020 [B]; Clarity sits inside Broadcom; and ServiceNow ships its own SPM. How this differs from its neighbours. 5415-msp-remote-monitoring-and-service-automation covers the MSP's own tools (RMM and PSA), sold to service providers who manage many clients; this record is the internal IT department's system of record. 541514-project-management-software is team task tracking, not demand, portfolio and IT-cost governance. 541514-workflow-automation-bpa-ipaas-rpa is the general automation layer. 541514-mdm-uem-mobile-device-and-endpoint-management manages the devices themselves, not the tickets, changes and CMDB around them. Incumbent vulnerability decides it: the leader is growing 21% at $13B and buying its challengers' wedges, and every lower tier already has a funded or free owner.

The incumbent
Who owns this market and who is coming for it. Fields a screen never reached say so rather than guessing.
Market size, derived
Built from the competitor set upward rather than quoted from a forecast. Published TAMs in these categories are frequently reverse-engineered from each other, so any published figure is checked against the vendor arithmetic rather than trusted on its own.
Disclosed revenue from 1 of 13 named vendors. The market is at least this large.
No vendor has both a disclosed revenue and a published share.
Only a revenue floor is known — the true market is larger by whatever the undisclosed vendors earn.

The CMDB is the market. Whoever holds the record of configuration items, services and their dependencies also holds change control, the service catalogue and, increasingly, the AI agent that acts on them — so ITSM is bought as a platform, and IT cost and portfolio tools are being folded into the same platform or into conglomerates.
Evidence
Evidence. Market size UNVERIFIED — no ITSM or SPM market figure is used, and no vendor breaks out ITSM revenue. Opened 2026-10-18 [A]: ServiceNow's FY2025 10-K (filed 2026-01-29; revenue $13.278B, subscription $12.883B, 603 customers above $5M ACV, ITSM and SPM described as products, Moveworks acquired 2025-12-15 for $2.4B total consideration, Armis agreement about $7.75B, competitors named as Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Salesforce and Workday); Atlassian's FY2026 10-K (filed 2026-08-14; revenue $6.572B, +26%, 350,000+ customers; Jira Service Management named as a key app with no revenue line); Freshworks' Q4 and full-year 2025 release (2026-02-10, San Mateo; FY revenue $838.8M; 'EX business crossed half a billion dollars in annual recurring revenue'; ESM and Device42 above $40M each; FireHydrant acquisition); IBM's release closing Apptio (Armonk, 2023-08-10). Opened [B]: BMC's release on Montagu's majority stake in BMC Helix (2026-06-17; regulatory approvals pending; no price); Techzine on the Apptio close ($4.6B; prior owner bought it for $1.94B in 2018); TA Associates' Planview release (2020-11-10, $1.6B, Austin); CVC's TOPdesk release (2023-12-12, about €200M minority, 5,000+ organisations); Globes on SysAid (2018-11-20, $30M from IGP, founded 2002); InvGate's own blog post announcing its $35M Riverwood round (July 2023). Vendor claims [C]: Halo's about and contact pages (self-funded, no investors, Stowmarket HQ); Xurrent's blog on the PSG investment (terms undisclosed) and its about page (Santa Barbara and Austin listed as global headquarters); EasyVista's OTRS release (Eurazeo-backed, >€70M sales expected); Matrix42's about page (Frankfurt, 1992, 4,300+ customers); Planview's about page (3,000+ customers); ManageEngine's about page; Broadcom's Clarity page; Combodo's and Zammad's company pages; GitHub API for GLPI, iTop and Zammad licences. Not used: a press figure of $875M for BMC Helix (Bloomberg Tax bars automated access); aggregator funding totals for Xurrent; the $510M EX ARR figure, which comes from call transcripts. servicenow.com and freshworks.com's homepage returned 403 or a bot check; ServiceNow's facts rest on its 10-K. Zendesk was considered and left out as a customer-service vendor first. Planview's current ownership after the 2020 deal and Matrix42's owners were not re-checked. Verify before acting.
