Of 2,191 Canadian establishments with employees, 82% have fewer than ten — an industry of very small operators. Each of those is one potential account, before any filter for size or fit.

Entry signal — what decides who wins here

One thing must be true
Structure decides One thing must be true Execution decides

Entry turns on a single condition that can be named and tested before much is spent. Clear it and this becomes an execution question; fail it and no amount of operating skill helps.

What you would have to beat

Displace an incumbent the screen found well defended — payments attached to the workflow, data that does not leave, a contract that renews itself. Share here means giving a buyer a reason to break something that currently works, which is a higher bar than being better.

Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.

This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — incumbent vulnerability

Two systems of record share the bank and credit-union desk, and the decision engine underneath belongs to the score and bureau companies. nCino earned $594.8M in the year to 31 January 2026, up 10%, and reported its first GAAP profit ($5.2M) after fourteen years [A]. It ended the year with over 2,700 customers, about 1,500 of them depository institutions, and 114 paying more than $1M a year [A]. Its strength is commercial and small-business credit at banks; mortgage is a separate $79.6M US line [A]. MeridianLink is the consumer and credit-union side: it earned $316.3M in 2024, $249.3M of it from lending software, across about 2,000 institutions, and charges per application for personal, auto and card loans whether the application is approved or not [A]. Centerbridge took it private at $20.00 a share, about $2.39B of total funding including debt, and the NYSE delisting was filed on 24 October 2025 [A]. MeridianLink's own 10-K says its main competition in non-mortgage consumer origination is the bank's core provider (Fiserv, FIS, Jack Henry, Temenos), then nCino and Q2, then CU Direct's Origence and Sync1 [A]. Q2's 10-K names Abrigo, Baker Hill, nCino, Finastra, Brilliance and Temenos against its lending products, and Q2 has only about 100 digital-lending customer accounts against $794.8M of total revenue [A]. The decision layer is held by FICO, whose 10-K names Experian, Equifax, Moody's, MeridianLink and CGI as its origination competitors [A], with Provenir, Taktile and Zest AI as the funded independents. The AI-underwriting entrant already exists and is well funded. Zest AI took $200M from Insight Partners in December 2024 and says nearly 300 lenders use it [B/C]. Upstart sells the same idea to banks and credit unions as a lending platform: $1.04B revenue in 2025, $11.0B of loans, 91% fully automated, over 100 lending partners [A]. Consolidation is the exit. Moody's absorbed Numerated (numerated.com now redirects to Moody's loan-origination page), Alkami paid about $375M for MANTL's account opening in March 2025 [A], nCino bought DocFox, FullCircl and Sandbox Banking [A], and Carlyle, Accel-KKR, Flexpoint Ford and Centerbridge own Abrigo, Baker Hill and MeridianLink. How this differs from the neighbouring records. The mortgage record (5222) is ICE's Encompass world: one-to-four-family loans, servicing and secondary marketing. This record covers everything else a lender books: personal, auto and card loans and small-business credit, plus deposit account opening and the credit decision engine. The core banking record (5221) is the ledger the LOS posts to, and the core vendor is the LOS's first competitor. The financial data and credit analytics record (5239) holds the bureaus and scores that feed the decision; the fraud and identity record (5221) covers application fraud and KYC, which origination vendors now bundle. The lenders themselves, including the 60 on CNBC's 2026 list, are on the fintech topic page. In Canada, Covaleyo (Valeyo and Covarity, merged April 2025) says ProLender is used by 30% of Canadian credit unions [C]; Lendesk's Finmo is mortgage-broker software and belongs with the mortgage record. Incumbent vulnerability decides it. An entrant has to beat the core provider's bundled LOS, then nCino or MeridianLink, then a model-risk review of any new credit model, and the two independent AI-underwriting vendors with real funding (Zest AI, Taktile) are already selling into that gap.

I

The incumbent

Who owns this market and who is coming for it. Fields a screen never reached say so rather than guessing.

Incumbent
nCino (bank commercial and SMB) and MeridianLink (consumer and credit-union); the core providers (Fiserv, FIS, Jack Henry, Temenos) bundle origination; FICO and Experian own the decision engine
Scale
nCino $594.8M FY2026 (+10%) [A]; MeridianLink $316.3M 2024 ($249.3M lending software) [A], now private under Centerbridge; FICO Software segment $822.3M FY2025, origination not broken out [A]
Share
No published share. nCino reports about 1,500 depository customers and MeridianLink about 2,000 institutions [A]; against roughly 8,772 federally insured US banks and credit unions (Q2 10-K citing BauerFinancial) [A], the two together touch a large minority, with overlap unknown
Challengers
Q2, Temenos, Alkami (MANTL), Abrigo, Baker Hill, Moody's (Numerated); decisioning and AI underwriting: Zest AI, Provenir, Taktile, Upstart; auto: defi SOLUTIONS; Canada: Covaleyo
Lock-in mechanism
Moderate to strong. The LOS holds the credit policy, approval workflow and audit trail that examiners review, and integrates to the core, the bureaus and the document vault; MeridianLink signs multi-year contracts with initial terms of three years or more that are not cancellable without penalty [A]. A new credit model adds a model-risk and fair-lending review on top of the software swap
Price movement
Shifting from seats to usage and assets. MeridianLink charges per application for consumer loans whether approved or not [A]; nCino moved to asset-based pricing in fiscal 2025 [A]. No list prices published
Is the buyer consolidating?
Yes — US bank and credit-union counts keep falling through mergers (Q2 counts about 8,741 institutions under $100B of assets), and each merger collapses two LOS contracts into one. The vendors are consolidating too: Centerbridge (MeridianLink), Moody's (Numerated), Alkami (MANTL), nCino's seven acquisitions

FICO 10-K for FY2025: Software segment and named origination competitors. Alkami 10-K for 2025: MANTL consideration. Temenos FY2025 results release: ARR. Tier B, opened: Zest AI's release on the $200M Insight Partners investment and its November 2025 customer-round release (nearly 300 lenders is the company's own claim, C). Abrigo's release on Carlyle's 2021 investment. Baker Hill's release on Flexpoint Ford (June 2023). Auto Remarketing on the defi SOLUTIONS–Sagent Auto merger (Aug 2019). Crunchbase News on Lendio's $55M (Feb 2020, $108.5M total). numerated.com redirecting to Moody's was observed directly. From search coverage only, not opened: Taktile's $54M Series B and $79M total (fintech.global). Not sourced, stated plainly: market size is UNVERIFIED. No filer breaks out consumer origination: FICO, Experian, Temenos and Q2 bundle it, and nCino's lines are by geography and mortgage, not by loan type. MeridianLink stopped filing after the take-private, so its revenue here is 2024. Provenir's funding could not be confirmed from a primary page. Origence (CU Direct) is named by MeridianLink but origence.com bars ClaudeBot in robots.txt, so it was not opened. Finastra's site returned 403 on robots.txt and was not used. The Canadian names in the task were checked: Konfidis is a Toronto single-family-rental data firm, not a lender-software vendor, and is excluded; Lendesk is mortgage-broker software.
