PLM — Product Lifecycle Management for Discrete Manufacturers
Entry signal — what decides who wins here
One thing must be trueEntry turns on a single condition that can be named and tested before much is spent. Clear it and this becomes an execution question; fail it and no amount of operating skill helps.
Displace an incumbent the screen found well defended — payments attached to the workflow, data that does not leave, a contract that renews itself. Share here means giving a buyer a reason to break something that currently works, which is a higher bar than being better.
Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.
This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — incumbent vulnerability
PLM is the manufacturer's record of what the product is. It holds the bill of materials, the change orders (ECR/ECO/ECN) that moved it, the CAD vault (PDM), requirements, quality and compliance records, and the supplier view of all of it. ERP, MES and service all read from it, which is why the incumbents are hard to dislodge. Three vendors hold the enterprise tier and all three are growing. PTC's PLM product group earned $1,639.0M in FY2025, up from $1,333.4M, and 95% of PTC's revenue is recurring [A]. Dassault Systèmes' Industrial Innovation software, the line that holds ENOVIA beside CATIA and SIMULIA, rose 6% at constant currency to €3,134.5M [A]. Siemens says its PLM business mainly drove Digital Industries software to €1,900M in its fiscal fourth quarter alone, up 14% [A]. Siemens has also spent about $10B in enterprise value on Altair [A]. None of the three is weak. Below the enterprise tier, newcomers keep getting bought: Arena went to PTC for about $715M [A], Onshape to PTC [C], Toronto's Upchain to Autodesk in 2021 [B], and Duro to Altium, a Renesas subsidiary, in December 2025 [C]. A cloud PLM for small hardware teams can be built, but so far it has ended in a sale to one of the incumbents, not as an independent company. Incumbent vulnerability decides it. The opening is beside the system of record, not a replacement for it. CoLab of St. John's raised C$28.6M for design review that plugs into Windchill, Teamcenter and 3DEXPERIENCE [B]. How this differs from the neighbours: the 334410 record covers EDA for chip and board design, and the 315 record covers apparel PLM (Centric, FlexPLM, Lectra). This record covers mechanical and mechatronic PLM across automotive, aerospace, machinery, medical devices and consumer products. The 336 code is a navigation anchor only. PLM began in transportation equipment, but its buyers span all of discrete manufacturing.

The incumbent
Who owns this market and who is coming for it. Fields a screen never reached say so rather than guessing.
Financials & market size — sourced
Figures that came from a filing, a results release or reputable reporting, each carrying its evidence tier.
Market size, derived
Built from the competitor set upward rather than quoted from a forecast. Published TAMs in these categories are frequently reverse-engineered from each other, so any published figure is checked against the vendor arithmetic rather than trusted on its own.
Disclosed revenue from 1 of 10 named vendors. The market is at least this large.
No vendor has both a disclosed revenue and a published share.
Only a revenue floor is known — the true market is larger by whatever the undisclosed vendors earn.

Open source · 2 projects — the price floor
The one open-source PLM of note, with a small following on GitHub. It does not constrain incumbent pricing
Open-source parametric CAD, not PLM. It is listed because it is the free end of the CAD seat that PDM sits behind
The price floor is the incumbents' own cloud entry tiers, not open source. PTC lists Onshape at $1,500 and $2,500 per user per year with a free plan below that [A], Arena serves 1,500+ companies as cloud PLM [C], and Autodesk sells Fusion Manage to its Inventor and Fusion base. The cheap end of the market is therefore already owned by the same three or four groups that own the enterprise end.
Evidence
Evidence. Opened and read 2026-10-13. Tier A: PTC's FY2025 10-K on EDGAR (accession 0001193125-25-291326), for revenue by product group (PLM $1,639.0M, CAD $992.9M), ARR of $2,478.5M, 95% recurring revenue, 30,000+ customers, the named competitors and the Kepware/ThingWorx sale to TPG for up to $725M. PTC's 8-K of 2021-01-15, for Arena at about $715M net of cash. Dassault Systèmes' Q4/FY2025 release of 2026-02-11, the PDF on 3ds.com read as text, for €6,239.6M total, €3,134.5M Industrial Innovation, CATIA/SIMULIA/ENOVIA named strongest and subscriptions +11%. Siemens' Q4 FY2025 earnings release of 2025-11-13, for DI revenue €17,788M and Q4 software €1,900M led by PLM. Siemens' press release of 2025-03-26 on Altair, for an EV of about $10B. Published prices on the Onshape and OpenBOM pricing pages. Tier B: CIMdata's public summary of 4 June 2026, $88.3B and +9.9%. Note that this is CIMdata's broad PLM definition including CAD, CAE, EDA and AEC, so it is far larger than the PLM-backbone market this record screens. The cPDm segment figure is UNVERIFIED. Also tier B: Aras' own 2018 release ($70M Series D), Schnitger Corp on the 2021 GI Partners investment, Propel's own Series C release ($48M total), BetaKit on CoLab (C$28.6M Series B, earlier rounds of C$0.6M, C$2.7M and C$21M, which sum to C$52.9M), Gunderson Dettmer on Duro's $7.5M seed, and Beyond PLM on Upchain (April 2021; the author is OpenBOM's CEO). Tier C: the Duro–Altium deal (Duro homepage banner plus CB Insights in search; no press release found, no terms), Arena's 1,500+ customers, Onshape's 2019 acquisition by PTC (price not verified, none stated), the lock-in description, and Oracle/SAP positioning. Oracle's, Autodesk's, PTC's own and SAP's product sites returned 403 on robots.txt or on the page, so they were not read. Corrections to the brief: Upchain was acquired in 2021, not 2023. No ENOVIA, Teamcenter or Windchill revenue is published; only PTC's PLM product group is disclosed. Bild's and OpenBOM's funding appears only on aggregators and is not used.
