The binding constraint is not executional. Being better than the incumbent does not, by itself, get you in — this one is cleared with capital, an asset, or a permission.

What you would have to beat

Come with the asset, or buy the business that owns it. Plant, fleet, land or quota decide this market before any operating skill does. Operators here are bought, not started.

Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.

This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — capital intensity

The gigafactory wave is real demand, not hype: CATL alone sold 661 GWh of lithium-ion batteries in 2025, up 39% [A], and North America is trying to localise that supply. But a cell plant is not a business an entrant with ordinary resources can go into. It is a few cell makers building plants that cost billions, sized for an anchor automaker, and underwritten by production subsidies about as large as the capex. PowerCo's St. Thomas plant is up to C$7B for up to 90 GWh [A] — about C$78M per GWh at the stated maximums — and the Parliamentary Budget Officer puts the federal and Ontario production subsidy for that one plant at C$13.2B [A]. The US 45X credit pays $35 per kWh of cells sold until 2030 and phases out by 2033 [A]. Everything is sunk years before the first sale, and the pipeline shows what happens when the demand forecast moves. Québec wrote off $270M when it ended Northvolt Six [A]; Honda indefinitely suspended its C$15B Ontario EV value chain [A]; Ford took a $2.9B charge leaving BlueOval SK, taking two Kentucky plants at a $0.9B fair value while assuming a $3.8B DOE note [A]; GM booked $7.9B of EV realignment charges in 2025, battery-cell JV settlements included [A]. Even the leader in Canada earns on the subsidy: LGES's Q3 2026 operating profit of KRW 756B falls to KRW 339.1B without North American credits [B]. Plants are surviving by pivoting to grid and data-centre storage — NextStar Windsor now sells ESS cells, and Tesla shipped its first Megapack with Nevada-made LFP cells [A]. The reachable business is around the plant, not in it: construction (EllisDon expects about 1,300 workers at peak in St. Thomas [A]) and the suppliers and services a town of 42,840 people [A] will be asked to provide.

Market scaleinternational

Cells, modules and cathode material ship across borders. NextStar says it exports mainly to the US, and US subsidies and tariffs are what decide where a plant goes. The plants compete for automaker and storage contracts across North America and against Asian imports. Siting is local (a town, a substation, a workforce), but the market is not.

Canadian establishments with employeesA 47 (Statistics Canada, July 2023): Ontario 18, Quebec 14, Alberta 7, British Columbia 7, Nova Scotia 1. The largest size band reached is 100–199 employees (2 establishments). In mid-2023 Canada had no battery plant of gigafactory scale

Who you would be competing with

The operators already at scale here, and whoever is buying these businesses. In most of these industries the competition an entrant meets is local, so this is who sets the terms rather than a list of everyone in the trade.

Largest operator
CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology, SZSE: 300750) worldwide; in Canada, LG Energy Solution through its wholly owned NextStar Energy plant in Windsor
Scale
CATL 2025: revenue RMB 423.7B (+17%), net profit RMB 72.2B (+42%), 661 GWh of lithium-ion batteries sold (+39%), 772 GWh of production capacity with 321 GWh more under construction at year end. NextStar Energy (LGES): more than C$5B invested, 1,300 direct employees, ten million cells made since November 2025.
Concentration
CATL reports a 39.2% global power-battery share for 2025, its ninth year in first place, and first place in energy-storage battery shipments for a fifth year, citing SNE Research. The shares of BYD, LGES, Panasonic, Samsung SDI and SK On were not read at source.
Others in the field
BYD; LG Energy Solution (NextStar Windsor, Ultium Cells with GM in Warren, Ohio and Spring Hill, Tennessee); Panasonic Energy (Sparks, Nevada and De Soto, Kansas); Samsung SDI (StarPlus Energy with Stellantis, Kokomo, Indiana); SK On (BlueOval SK, Tennessee); automaker-owned cell makers PowerCo (Volkswagen Group, St. Thomas), Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina, Tesla (Gigafactory Nevada); and upstream materials makers such as Vianode (synthetic anode graphite, about 280 acres of the St. Thomas park per the city as reported).
Lock-in mechanism
High, and it runs through ownership rather than contract. A North American cell plant is usually built as a joint venture with, or by, the automaker that will buy its output: Ultium Cells is GM and LGES 50/50, BlueOval SK was Ford and SK On 50/50, StarPlus is Stellantis and Samsung SDI, PowerCo is Volkswagen's own. The buyer is chosen before the ground is broken; there is no open market for an independent plant's cells to win.
Price movement
Not assessed — no cell-price series was opened at source. The IEA's Global EV Outlook 2026 launch slides chart battery pack prices falling with cumulative production and say 'economies of scale and battery technology innovation accelerated battery price declines in China', but give no table.
Is the buyer consolidating?
Yes — The consolidation runs the other way from most industries: the automakers are leaving the joint ventures and the cell makers are taking them over. In February 2026 LG Energy Solution, 'in a mutually agreed decision with Stellantis', took full ownership of NextStar Energy; in May 2026 Ford's interest in BlueOval SK was redeemed in full and Ford left with the two Kentucky plants, SK On with the Tennessee one.

The status of StarPlus Energy's second Kokomo plant and of Samsung SDI's and SK On's US plants beyond the Ford 10-Q was not confirmed. No cell price series, no plant-level margin and no Ontario or Québec production-subsidy contract text was read. The C$78M per GWh is derived from two stated maximums and is UNVERIFIED as a cost. Ford's $0.9B fair value against a $3.8B note is the only market-tested value of a North American cell plant found. The cut factor is analyst judgment.

Building Wire & Cable MillStructure decides
binding constraint: capital intensity

A residual group holding batteries, wire and cable, wiring devices and a tail of unlike electrical components. The screen takes the one niche with a clean public anchor — building wire and cable — and says plainly that the rest was not examined. The attraction is the same electrification demand that lifts the rest of subsector 335: every data centre, house and grid upgrade is wired with this product, and it is heavy enough that domestic mills hold the market. The anchor shows what holding it takes. In 2024 Prysmian bought Encore Wire for $290.00 a share, an implied enterprise value of about €3.9B — 8.2× 2023 EBITDA [A]. Encore made about $2.6B of revenue and $517M of EBITDA in 2023 from a single vertically integrated campus in McKinney, Texas, which Prysmian's release describes as built for low-cost production and centralised distribution [A]. That is the mechanism: building wire is a copper-conversion business in which the metal is most of the selling price, the product is a certified commodity that electrical distributors buy on price and fill rate, and the winner is whoever draws its own rod, carries the copper inventory and ships a full truck next day. A small mill buys rod at a worse price, carries the same metal exposure on a thinner balance sheet, and sells to distributors who already have two suppliers. The world's largest cable maker chose to buy that position rather than build it. The 207 Canadian establishments under five people are doing something else — harnesses, battery packs, specialty assemblies — and each would need its own record.
