Entry signal — what decides who wins here

One thing must be true
Structure decides One thing must be true Execution decides

Entry turns on a single condition that can be named and tested before much is spent. Clear it and this becomes an execution question; fail it and no amount of operating skill helps.

What you would have to beat

Displace an incumbent the screen found well defended — payments attached to the workflow, data that does not leave, a contract that renews itself. Share here means giving a buyer a reason to break something that currently works, which is a higher bar than being better.

Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.

This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — incumbent vulnerability

Finishing-trade software is three markets under one NAICS code, and the one with real lock-in has just been consolidated. The flooring dealer and installer side — sales orders, roll and cut inventory, installer calendars, job costing and accounting for carpet and flooring stores and flooring contractors — is now mostly in two hands. Cyncly (formerly Compusoft + 2020, backed by TA Associates) bought RFMS, a flooring ERP, CRM and measuring vendor with more than 35 years in the trade, in July 2022 [B], and agreed in December 2024 to buy Broadlume, which had already bought RollMaster (the flooring ERP that started as a family distributor's system in the late 1970s) and the flooring marketing agency FloorForce [B]; the combined unit trades as Cyncly Flooring and says Broadlume served thousands of dealers and manufacturers across North America [C]. rfms.com now redirects to Cyncly. The other consolidator is Canadian: Roomvo (Leap Tools Inc., Toronto), whose room visualiser says it sits on 7,000+ retailer websites [C], bought QFloors (South Jordan, Utah) in January 2025 [C]. Behind them, Measure Square (founded 2001 in Pasadena) sells flooring takeoff and estimating and says it has 4,500+ customers [C]. The painting side has no single owner: PaintScout (Calgary; says $4B+ of painting work has been sold through it [C]) leads on estimating, DripJobs (Ocala, Florida; 2,500+ painting and home-service contractors [C]) on follow-up CRM, Estimate Rocket (Newburyport, Massachusetts) on estimating and production, and the horizontal field-service tools — Jobber (Edmonton) and Housecall Pro (Denver; 45,000+ businesses [C]) — take the small crews that never buy a trade tool; they are researched at 238-fsm-field-service-management. The commercial drywall, acoustical and painting subcontractor side estimates off plans in ConstructConnect's On-Screen Takeoff and PlanSwift (41,000+ estimators claimed for PlanSwift [C]) or STACK (Cincinnati; $7M from Level Equity in 2018, doubled in 2022 [B]). Incumbent vulnerability decides it. The flooring ERP holds a dealer's inventory, purchase orders, installer schedules and books, so it is the stickiest software here, and it has just been bought by two consolidators in under three years; painting is a crowded, cheap CRM-and-estimate fight beneath horizontal tools with $100M+ of funding; and plan takeoff is owned by the commercial takeoff vendors. The buyer base is real but fragmented: 26,183 Canadian building-finishing establishments with employees (Statistics Canada, December 2023), 70% with one to four employees, and 127,033 US establishments with 847,233 employees (County Business Patterns, 2022) [A] — the small crew that buys a $50-a-month app, not an ERP. How this differs from its neighbours: 2383-building-finishing-contracting is the contractor as a business (defensibility decides it, no software); 238-fsm-field-service-management is the horizontal dispatch layer (Jobber, Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan) and is not re-researched here; 238160-roofing-contractor-software is insurance-claim and aerial-measurement software for roofers; 2361-home-builder-and-remodeler-software is builder and remodeler project management (Buildertrend, Builder Prime), which overlaps only where a remodeler also sells flooring or paint. A Canadian wedge is not open: two of the category's own leaders, PaintScout and Roomvo, are already Canadian.

I

The incumbent

Who owns this market and who is coming for it. Fields a screen never reached say so rather than guessing.

Incumbent
Cyncly Flooring (RFMS, Broadlume, RollMaster, FloorForce) for flooring dealers and installers; no single incumbent in painting (PaintScout leads the trade-specific tools, Jobber and Housecall Pro the horizontal ones); ConstructConnect (On-Screen Takeoff, PlanSwift) and STACK for commercial drywall and painting takeoff
Scale
Broadlume: thousands of dealers and manufacturers across North America, 20M+ consumers served (Cyncly release, Dec 2024) [C]. PaintScout: $4B+ of painting work sold through it [C]. PlanSwift: 41,000+ estimators [C]. No vendor publishes revenue
Challengers
Roomvo (with QFloors), Measure Square, PaintScout, DripJobs, Estimate Rocket, Jobber, Housecall Pro, STACK
Lock-in mechanism
High for flooring dealers: the ERP holds roll and cut inventory, vendor purchase orders and EDI, installer calendars, job costing and the general ledger, so switching is an accounting migration. Low to moderate for painting contractors: estimates, templates and the lead pipeline live in the tool, but jobs last days and DripJobs advertises migrations from Jobber and Housecall Pro. Moderate for takeoff: estimators keep assemblies and trade plugins in On-Screen Takeoff, PlanSwift or STACK. Migration cost was not measured
Price movement
Not sourced. DripJobs lists a $25/month texting add-on; no core list prices were compared
Is the buyer consolidating?
No — Contractors stay small: 18,424 of 26,183 Canadian establishments have one to four employees and only 57 have 100 or more (Statistics Canada, Dec 2023). Installed Building Products rolls up US installers (see the 2383 operating record). Vendors consolidate fast: Broadlume bought FloorForce and RollMaster (2021), Cyncly bought RFMS (2022) and Broadlume (2024), Roomvo bought QFloors (2025), ConstructConnect bought On Center (2017) and PlanSwift (2018)

Nobody here publishes revenue. The market is not sized for that reason — an estimate built on nothing would only look like knowledge.

Evidence

Evidence. Research 2026-10-20. Tier A: establishment counts from Statistics Canada table 33-10-0806-01 (Canadian Business Counts, with employees, December 2023) and US Census County Business Patterns 2022, as carried on the /industries/2383 page. Tier B, opened: Hardwood Floors magazine for Compusoft + 2020's purchase of RFMS (July 2022); the PE Hub headline names TA Associates as the backer (article body paywalled); Cyncly's own release (London, 5 December 2024) and FCNews for the Broadlume deal; FCNews (19 November 2021) for Broadlume buying RollMaster after FloorForce, Creating Your Space, Freetail and Retail Lead Management; STACK's own post (22 March 2022) and the 2018 PRWeb release on VARInsights for Level Equity's $7M; ConstructConnect's 2018 PlanSwift release and its company timeline for On Center (2017) and PlanSwift, QuoteSoft, SmartBid (2018). Tier C: QFloors' about page for the January 2025 sale to Leap Tools Inc. (Roomvo, Toronto); every customer count a vendor states about itself (Roomvo 7,000+ retailer sites, Measure Square 4,500+, DripJobs 2,500+, Housecall Pro 45,000+, PlanSwift 41,000+, PaintScout $4B+); PaintScout's Calgary HQ and founding year from its own llms.txt. Vendor revenue and market size UNVERIFIED — no finishing-trade software vendor publishes revenue, Cyncly and Roper do not break the lines out, and no Roomvo, PaintScout, DripJobs or Measure Square funding round was found in reputable coverage. getjobber.com refused automated retrieval (403); rollmaster.com is a parked domain for sale, so RollMaster was read on legacy.rmaster.com; RFMS's own site now redirects to Cyncly. A 'Floor Covering Software / Broadloom' vendor was checked: the name is Broadlume (above); Broadloom City appears only as a carpet store in QFloors' history.
