Of 39,641 Canadian establishments with employees, 88% have fewer than ten — an industry of very small operators. Each of those is one potential account, before any filter for size or fit.
Entry signal — what decides who wins here
One thing must be trueEntry turns on a single condition that can be named and tested before much is spent. Clear it and this becomes an execution question; fail it and no amount of operating skill helps.
Displace an incumbent the screen found well defended — payments attached to the workflow, data that does not leave, a contract that renews itself. Share here means giving a buyer a reason to break something that currently works, which is a higher bar than being better.
Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.
This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — incumbent vulnerability
Home builder and remodeler software is two markets that share a NAICS code, and both already have an owner. The custom builder and remodeler side — schedules, selections, change orders, client portal, estimates and job costing for firms building a few to a few dozen homes or renovations a year — is held by Buildertrend, which took its first institutional money from Bain Capital Tech Opportunities and HGGC in December 2020 [A for the round, terms undisclosed] and used it to buy its nearest rival, CoConstruct, in February 2021; the combined business said it served 23,000 clients and over 1.1 million users in 2020 [C via the release, carried by Pro Builder]. Behind it sits a crowded, self-funded or lightly funded field — JobTread (Dallas; says customers have sold and managed over $5B of jobs on it [C]), Builder Prime (Staten Island; Series A led by Blueprint Equity in 2023 [A for the round]), Contractor Foreman, BuildBook, Projul, UDA Technologies and Houzz Pro, which rides the Houzz homeowner marketplace. The production builder side — purchasing, scheduling and supplier orders for builders closing hundreds or thousands of homes — is consolidated into three suites: Hyphen Solutions (Dallas; BuildPro and SupplyPro) says 1 in 3 new homes in America is built on its software, 330,133 homes in 2025, with 565 builders and 18,000 suppliers on the network [C]; Constellation HomeBuilder Systems (NEWSTAR, BuildTopia; part of Toronto-listed Constellation Software) says forty percent of the Top 200 North American homebuilders use its software [C]; and ECI Software Solutions sells MarkSystems ERP for production and semi-custom builders alongside Lasso CRM, LotVue, AvidCX and AvidWarranty [C]. Incumbent vulnerability decides it. The production side is a network business — Hyphen's value is the 18,000 suppliers wired to its builders, and a builder's ERP holds every lot, option and purchase order — so neither switching nor a new entrant is cheap. The custom/remodel side is not locked in the same way, but it is where the money is already competing: Buildertrend is private-equity-backed and acquisitive, JobTread and a dozen cheaper tools undercut it, and Procore's 10-K says its core customers span the residential and non-residential segments [A]. The buyer base is real but cyclical: US private housing starts ran at a 1,221,000 seasonally adjusted annual rate in September 2026, 7.4% below a year earlier, with single-family starts at 859,000 [A]; Canadian starts were 248,896 (SAAR) in September 2026 against 280,669 a year before [A]. Builder software is bought and cut with that cycle. How this differs from its neighbours: 2361-residential-building-construction is the builder as a business (capital intensity decides it) and names no software; 2362-nonresidential-building-construction is commercial GC software (Procore, Autodesk, Oracle, Trimble, Sage) and is not re-researched here; 238-fsm-field-service-management is dispatch for service trades (ServiceTitan, Jobber, Housecall Pro), which overlaps only at the remodeler/home-improvement edge where Builder Prime and Joist sit. Bridgit (Waterloo) was checked and sells workforce planning to general and specialty contractors, not to home builders, so it is listed only as a startup row.

Market size, derived
Built from the competitor set upward rather than quoted from a forecast. Published TAMs in these categories are frequently reverse-engineered from each other, so any published figure is checked against the vendor arithmetic rather than trusted on its own.
Disclosed revenue from 1 of 12 named vendors. The market is at least this large.
No vendor has both a disclosed revenue and a published share.
Only a revenue floor is known — the true market is larger by whatever the undisclosed vendors earn.

Evidence
Evidence. Buyer base is tier A: US starts from the Census/HUD September 2026 release (20 October 2026) and Canadian starts from CMHC via Statistics Canada table 34-10-0158-01 (19 October 2026, CSV opened). Procore's revenue and its residential/non-residential customer statement are from its FY2025 10-K [A]. Buildertrend's Bain Capital Tech Opportunities / HGGC round is from the investor's own PR Newswire release (Dec 2020) and the CoConstruct deal from the release as carried by Pro Builder (Feb 2021) [B]; buildertrend.com refuses automated retrieval, so the homepage itself was not opened. Hyphen's and Constellation HomeBuilder Systems' scale claims are vendor statements [C] from Hyphen's homepage and Constellation's IBS 2026 NEWSTAR brochure. Builder Prime's Series A is from its own release [A for the round]; Bridgit's C$43.5m from Communitech (Series B, Oct 2021) [B]; Joist's sale to EverCommerce from BetaKit [B]. Vendor revenue UNVERIFIED — no residential-software vendor publishes revenue, and Procore does not split residential out. Houzz (robots.txt bars Claude agents), Contractor Foreman, Buildxact and constellationhb.com (all 403) could not be opened; NARI and r/Construction-type communities are blocked.
