Can you find out who owns it?

Texas keeps no public title register; ownership is read from the county appraisal district. Midland Central Appraisal District (MCAD) posts its whole certified 2026 real-property roll as a free download on its Open Records page - owner of record, mailing address, situs, legal description, acreage, deed date and instrument number, state class code and value for every account - and a free property search. Deeds are recorded by the Midland County Clerk, at $1 a page for a copy and $5 to certify. No record holds a price: Texas has no mandatory sales disclosure, and sales an appraisal district obtains privately are confidential under Government Code Sec. 552.149.

Who owns the town

At this scale the significant owner is rarely a trust or a fund: it is one or two local holding companies, a family in its second or third generation, and often the land around the town rather than the buildings in it.

The City of Midland is by far the largest landholder inside its own limits - parkland, the airport and raw sections of ranchland on the edges - and its holdings run on outside the city to its wastewater disposal farms. The richest public ground, though, is the hospital district's. The largest private holder of land in the city is a ranch-land company, Cumberland & Western Resources LLC. Figures are 2026 certified market values (MCAD export 6 Aug 2026) for real-property accounts carrying the City of Midland (CTM) taxing unit; exempt public property is appraised far below cost. There are no railroad accounts under Union Pacific or BNSF names on the real roll.

Who builds the houses

New-home building in this market: the volume, and the firms behind it. Ownership of a builder matters as much as its volume — a private-equity platform and a family firm behave differently.

Midland builds houses, almost no apartments under permit: the Census Bureau counted 1,317 single-family units ($297.5M) permitted in the city in 2025 and no buildings of two or more units. One local family-founded builder dominates - Betenbough Homes, based in Lubbock - with D.R. Horton the only national. Figures count accounts held in each builder's name inside the city on the 2026 roll (lots and unsold homes), not homes built; no league table of Midland starts by builder was found. Builders whose company name is a person's full name are left out.

Commercial landlords

The commercial side, counted separately from housing: who holds the office, retail and industrial floor area.

Midland's tax base is oil: the ten largest taxpayers in FY2025 are eight energy companies and two utilities, led by Permian Deep Rock Oil Co LLC ($865.7M taxable, 3.89% of the city's taxable value) and Diamondback E&P LLC ($534.6M) - mineral and business-personal-property values, not buildings (ACFR Table 8). The real-estate landlords below are read from the 2026 roll for accounts inside the City taxing unit. Apartments are the largest private real-estate class: 909 multifamily (B) accounts worth $2.06B against 3,610 commercial (F1) accounts worth $3.91B. Out-of-state syndicates hold most of the large complexes. No national single-family-rental REIT appears; the largest rental-house holder has 68 homes.

Claims this page would have made if a source could be opened. They are left out rather than guessed.

  • Who controls COG Realty LLC, Tall City Towers LLC and the Franklin Mountain Permian entities - the roll gives only the entity and a mailing city; no filing was opened that names the parent.
  • No sale price exists for any Midland building: Texas has no sales disclosure and MCAD's sale data is confidential (Gov't Code 552.149).
  • The downtown 4-star hotel and 800-space garage under the City's 380 agreement ($125M+, with Midland Development Corporation and 'Private Investors', ACFR) - its site and owning entity were not established.
  • Midland County Clerk's deed records were not searched, so no deed was read.
